I was sitting here the other day and just watching my partner with our 3 month old daughter. She is so awesome with her. She breast feeds our baby well actually the baby being preemie doesn't take to the breast yet so my partner pumps every 4 hours and freezes it and makes the bottles as we go along. Non of my other children's moms have done that. I'm really proud of my partner for doing this. we have a schedule as I feed our daughter, she pumps. Our daughter has reflux so she is on Zantac and has to have it mixed with her breast milk so my partner mixes 1 oz breast milk and her Zantac as well as when she has to have her iron. My other kid's moms are good with them but I would have to say out of all of them, the partner I have now has been the best and has done far more for our baby than the rest. Breast milk is so much better and all my others were on formula. It's hard having a preemie but to see her other than her size you wouldn't know this baby was born 3 months ago weighing 3 lbs 5.5 oz. she now weighs 11 lbs 15 oz..She is now eating cereal and next month the Dr. says we can start juice. She already loves prune juice. The only reason she has bloomed so fast and so well is because of breast milk,so moms if your baby is a preemie or even if they aren't don't use formula use breast milk even if you have to pump it into bottles instead like my partner.

Ace,

Congrates on your new bundle of joy. Thank God for a partner who nurtures and cares for the baby, with your help also. I do believe your daughter has a cool mom. Give mom a hug for me.

God Bless

My aim isn't to argue against breast milk by any means; because today's doctors always recommend breast milk over formula milk. I have a "however", though - and that's that I, too, had a premie (born in November, 28 years ago) and just a little bigger than your baby. He was gavage-fed formula in order to get the most calories into him with the least burning up of those calories; and he had a reputation among the special-care nurses as being "quite the screamer". When I brought him home I continued feeding him formula, and (this is no exaggeration) that baby barely ever cried. He was a happy secure baby who developed ahead of his age, began kindergarten at four, and remained at the top of his class through the years to follow. He's got an IQ that's hard to top, and a younger sister who was also born early (but not quite as early) just like him.

In a day and age when so much emphasis is placed on the advantages of breast milk (and I'm not arguing about it being best), it is too often forgotten that the quality of emotional nurturing and overall mothering make a whole lot more difference than whether a baby is fed mother's milk or formula. Nurturing a child's sense of security can affect how his brain connections are formed, how well his immune system functions for the rest of his life, and how well his stress-response system functions for the rest of his life.

So, while I agree with your suggestion that mothers of premies feed their baby their own milk, I'd expand on that and also suggest parents of infants learn as much as they can about nurturing a sense of security and developing brain connections; because while breast milk may be good, it isn't nearly enough to guarantee a well adjusted, thriving, healthy, bright, child.

Congratulations on the birth of your precious premie daughter. In fairness to her mother, though, if the baby is thriving it's about a whole lot more she's getting from her mother than just the kind of milk she's getting. :)
